The Right Rest Time for Your Fitness Goal
Rest Interval Guidelines by Goal
Choosing the right rest time depends entirely on your training objectives:
- Muscle Strength (High weight, low reps): Rest for 3 to 5 minutes. This duration allows your central nervous system and muscular energy to recover completely, enabling you to lift heavy again.
- Muscle Growth / Hypertrophy (Moderate weight, moderate reps): Rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Modern sports science indicates that longer rest intervals (2+ minutes) yield better muscle growth than short rests because they maintain a higher total training volume.
- Muscular Endurance (Low weight, high reps): Rest for 30 to 60 seconds. Short rest periods keep the heart rate elevated and challenge the muscles to perform under fatigue.
